Learning about the Holocaust in Greece

Between December 2025 and March 2026, KMOP organised four interactive REM Heritage workshops in Athens, engaging 90 young people aged 18-25 years old. The workshops connected remembrance with contemporary challenges related to racism, antisemitism, discrimination, social exclusion and democratic participation.

Through guided discussions, participants explored how racism and discrimination are socially constructed and reinforced through public narratives, institutions and interpersonal behaviour.

A central part of the workshops focused on the Holocaust and its impact in Greece, where approximately 91% of the country’s pre-war Jewish population was murdered. Testimonies, historical references and audiovisual material helped participants connect the experiences of Holocaust victims with current manifestations of antisemitism, racism and other forms of hatred.

The limited attention given to the Holocaust in formal education emerged as a recurring concern. Participants across all four workshops reported that they had received little or no structured Holocaust education during their school years.
